Loft:

What’s been your favorite project that you’ve worked on?

Ed O'Brien:

One of my professional highlights was getting to work with Southwest Airlines. They had a relatively nascent innovation team so my team was brought on to bring some of their ideas to life. Their big ask?  Solve for a better customer experience. We dove straight in, working with them collaboratively on an ongoing basis.

The second was a project that we did with a Japanese home builder. We were tasked with looking at the future of the connected home in the US. I spent two weeks in Japan so we could understand their design methodology and process. I loved the experience of being introduced to a new culture. It’s a very design-led culture and country so we wanted to bring that to the US.

L:

Who's your dream client?

EO:

Anytime I can be exposed to new categories, businesses, or clients where I don’t have experience. I love the chance to get outside my comfort zone. I look at challenges from the framework of a designer. Would this inspire somebody? Is this something we haven’t looked at before? Is this a category where we can apply a methodology? Sustainability is a huge interest of mine. Any category where I haven’t had exposure is something that excites me.

L:

How did your relationship with Loft start?

EO:

I was introduced to Jeanette and Gregor over a year ago through a mutual friend. It started out as smart conversations with smart people and we’ve been having interesting conversations ever since.

L:

What are you most excited to do as a member of the Loft team?

EO:

I’m most exited to get to know the team. It’s one of the most gratifying parts of working in design. it’s full of fun, thoughtful, smart, interesting people from a variety of backgrounds. Finding and shaping projects that are fun and fulfilling is something I take seriously. I believe you need to understand the people you represent, what makes them tick, their goals and interests, and their capabilities to truly be effective.

L:

What’s your favorite midday snack to get through the afternoon slump?

EO:

I like to eat fairly healthy so my go-to is nuts and fruit. I try to stay away from the vices... so I don’t have too many of them in the house. Emphasis on try :)

L:

What is your favorite way to wind down after work?

EO:

I like to be engaged at work. Interacting with people in meetings and hitting the road energizes me but at the end of the day, I like to go home, flip on the TV, and relax. My wife and I are binge-watching Handmaid’s Tale right now
