What is a mother? As someone who has spent more than half my life without a mom I’ve leaned on all kinds of surrogates over the years. Friends, moms of friends, a mosaic of mothering from women (and men) throughout my life. To me, a mom is anyone who supports you and tells you you’re special. Someone who is accepting but demanding in the same complicated warm cocktail.
So why celebrate what we get from “moms” with what feels homogenous and stereotypical and archaic? This year, I’m challenging us to acknowledge all of our “moms.” And instead of rushing to the instant gratification of checking “gift-giving off your list” …dig deeper. If you were to measure your “gift” by the amount of time you put into giving it or thought behind it, here’s how things stack up: Amazon candles? Cold! Instagram socks? Cold. A thoughtful text message? Warmer.... A phone call? Warmer still. Your time? Bingo!
