What is a mother? As someone who has spent more than half my life without a mom I’ve leaned on all kinds of surrogates over the years. Friends, moms of friends, a mosaic of mothering from women (and men) throughout my life. To me, a mom is anyone who supports you and tells you you’re special. Someone who is accepting but demanding in the same complicated warm cocktail.

Go Above and Beyond This Year

So why celebrate what we get from “moms” with what feels homogenous and stereotypical and archaic? This year, I’m challenging us to acknowledge all of our “moms.” And instead of rushing to the instant gratification of checking “gift-giving off your list” …dig deeper. If you were to measure your “gift” by the amount of time you put into giving it or thought behind it, here’s how things stack up: Amazon candles? Cold! Instagram socks? Cold. A thoughtful text message? Warmer.... A phone call? Warmer still. Your time? Bingo!

As an overly scheduled business owner and mother of two myself, here’s exactly how I would recommend gifting “time”:

  • Give “Mom” a break: A few hours of peace and quiet whenever and wherever she wants to spend them.
  • Do “Mom’s” chores: clean the bathroom! A clean, sparkling bathroom is literally my dream come true.
  • Take away “Mom’s” work distractions for a night. Spend quality time without phones, laptops, or emails.
  • Express love and share forgiveness. “Mom” guilt is real. Tell “Mom” they are doing great. Seriously.

And if the pandemic or distance is keeping you from spending the day with your mom, we’ve got some creative suggestions to beat the dreaded Amazon candle. Below are some picks from our favorite female-founded companies that can help mom relax and enjoy her day:
