The core technology of pairing imprinted molecular templates with an electrochemical platform to detect target allergenic ingredients had been tested and proven in the Allergy Amulet lab. The next step in the product development process was to package the test kit in a way that would be easy for users to make part of their everyday lives, without the burden of carrying around a medical device.
Loft and electrical and firmware expert, 219 Design, collaborated to wrap this core technology into a sleek design that brings the ability to detect food allergens to the masses. The teams aimed to create a useful wearable that users would want to integrate into their daily lives. Most food testing kits are clunky and look like medical devices, so Loft and 219 Design designed Allergy Amulet to be functional but also fashionable. The goal was to make users feel comfortable taking it with them everywhere. The result is a product that can be worn discreetly as a piece of jewelry or a fob.
Loft and 219 Design complemented each other's knowledge and expertise by seamlessly bringing together function and form. Generally speaking, Loft developed the user experience and mechanical design for the system: sampler, reader, and app and 219 optimized the electrical functionality to make it work.The two teams combined their knowledge in just the right areas to create a symbiotic relationship of mutual respect and understanding. They worked closely to make sure that everything fit together properly and found clever ways to miniaturize the design together, working through compromises between the technical functionality and usability requirements.
